It is not revolutionary to say that media and technology are changing with the world, from television advancing to Google’s Alexa giving evidence on a murder case. It’s become obvious that media is growing and we are growing with it. Before my time technology was a luxury not everyone had a cell phone or a television in their home. Media tech has integrated itself in to our everyday lives, as mentioned in the article by Henry Jenkins “family rooms have become more of entertainment… young people often deploy media to cut themselves off from the people around them. Yet, at the same time, these new technologies have enabled greater connection to more dispersed family members,”. Media is coming into our lives and allowing us to be distant physically but also connected to our loved ones. One thinks that it is helping but in my opinion, this dependency on media is going to make us as well as future generations couch potatoes. They will be socially awkward and not be able to handle physical interaction with other people. The article from BBC points out that out of the many species in this world that humans are the ones who are constantly evolving. The author says “you could go away for a million years and upon your return the chimpanzees would still be using the same sticks to ‘fish’ for termites and the same rocks to crack open nuts – their “cultures” do not cumulatively adapt.” We have a unique gift of continuously building and constructing our world to be bigger and easier for us. Which is something that he clearly states other animals can not do. Which brings me to question, why are we creating more and more technology that makes us lazy, inventors are always looking to add new apps to smartphones in order for us to have the world in the palm of our hands but again what is going to happen for future generations? When they stop coming up with things to invent or stop coming up with items and apps to make our lives easier, If you take the tech away will man kind just be more civilized visions of monkeys.
