medium is the message

According to the article, the many different forms of messaging has converged into one. Including oral, visual, and written messages. In the forms of television, print media, and the radio. These new inavasions have sky rocketed the humanity with wireless communication. Which connects us together better than ever before. Examples of these are international trade creating a quicker way with communication between two countries. However, it is desensitizing humanity, more specifically the youth into having less social skills and having more social media skills. This creates a dilemma where face to face communication as well etiquette down the drain.

Medium is the Message

Nowadays we get media faster than ever. My interpretation of what I got from the article is that the Medium is what will define the message in a sense. Back in the days, we were limited to how we get news or any time of media. It would mainly be through printed papers or television. The internet wasn’t as big as it is in today’s age. Depending on the medium that the message is presented on will determine how fast we get the message. Sometimes depending on the medium, the message may not even make sense to be presented with them. Nowadays everything is branding and marketing. Making sure you know exactly what to feed to your audience based on your analytics and history. If you feed something to them that is completely off topic or that doesn’t make sense to to what your brand is, you can steer your audience away and lose viewership.

The way media is nowadays with the internet, it is way to easy to access news and some outlets are faster than others. We are all about getting information as fast as we can and a lot of people like to find things out before others do. It’s funny how our society is now with the internet but that’s just how things are.

Medium is the Message

From what I understood about the article the term “Medium is the Message” means that where the message comes from is just as important as the message. The properties of the message provides certain elements to the message that one shouldn’t ignore. Technology has the ability to mold and shape the way that we perceive the use of something or how we understand something to begin with. The medium is intrinsic within the message. Trump making a statement on twitter means something different than we he makes that same statement during and interview or what have you.

The medium is the message

This article was kind of hard for me to understand. I Think I have an idea of where he was going with the whole “medium is the message phrase.” On the first page McLuhan says “ for the message of any medium or technology is the change of scale pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs” Following this he used an example of the railways and electric light. Basically railways did more than just introduce transportation. It enlarged the scale of previous human functions. He also talks about electric light being more than just light. I think his main point is everything has a deeper message.

If I’m understanding the article correctly, I think medium is important to how we consume digital media, because there’s hidden messages on there as well. Especially on social media. Some negative and some positive. I guess it’s all about how you look at it.

Class Activity Summary

1. What was your activity? Please be specific on what you asked the class to do and what you hoped it would accomplish.

Our activity was we took 4 envelopes and randomly put Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat in each one. We divided the groups into four and we asked them to write three things  they would like to add to this social media. Then write three things they would like to take away from this social media. We hoped to show how social media has an effect on the youth.  We heard interesting ideas and we hoped to accomplish creativity.

2. Did you think it was successful?

Yes

3. Did it achieve your implied goals?

Yes, it brought awareness to how social media has an impact on the youth.

4. What did you learn from the experience?

We learned that sometimes an upgrade or new feature can be less popular as opposed to its original functionality. Also, that the youth has more creativity when it comes to coming up with ideas.

5. How would you take this project further as a research tool and what results would you hope to achieve?

Do the same with our club members except this time we would ask them specifically to remove or add from their respective  social networking sites based on its effect on the youth.

Class 10 Media theory

In the first paragraph, Marshall Mcluhan lets us know that “medium is the message”. This means that form of a medium embeds itself in any message it would transmit or convey, creating a symbiotic relationship by which the medium influences how the message is perceived, according to Marshall Mcluhan. In this day and age there are many different mediums. We have social media, which plays a big role in how messages are delivered todays which has its pros and cons. In the article it states “the new patterns of human association tend to eliminate jobs…”. I believe this means that because of technology and how the message gets around people are losing their jobs. When I think of people losing their jobs I think of journalist first because back then they were the only ones delivering the messages.

In the reading, they are coming electric light to the medium. The reading states that the electric light is pure information. It is a medium without a message, as it were unless it is used to spell out some verbal ad or name. This analogy had me very confused when I first read it, but I feel like he is saying that light is always traveling and so is the message. That is what I got from this definition and reading.

Media Theory

Please write your response to the meeting and try to answer this question: Why is the medium so important to how we consume digital media?

According to Marshal Mcluhan, the medium within The Medium is the Message, is the form of a message whether that be print, visual or oral. And now due to the very tech advanced society we live in today, we can get media pretty much anywhere and distribute it as far as the internet takes it at an amazing speed. For example, you can see a trending video online and send it all the way via the internet to your cousin across the globe. Forms of communication or media include but are not limited to internet, television, newspaper, word of mouth, radio or computer. With, one can argue that yes communication between people verbally had decreased vastly from before but had inherited other mediums as the board for communication. So, you can say it’s a good thing that we have many mediums for communication, but the older methods and mediums for communication are dying out or weakening.

The medium is so important to how we consume digital media because it will determine how effectively your message will be distributed and how fast it will be sent out. With the technology we have now like iPad and WIFI and cell phones they help guarantee that we can distribute our message fast to as many people we want. In my opinion one major setback all this technology has on us is our face to face communication skills, and out spelling and vocabulary. All these” Smart Phones” are dumming the user down. Therefore, I feel the medium in which you use to consume digital media is very important.

Media Is the Message

This article was kind of difficult for me to understand. From what I got from it is that media is what we use when we want something to be said or known by the masses. That message is made from the content that content is intensified by another content and so on. The best example for this weird explanation that i’m trying to give is “The effect of the medium is made strong and intense just because it is given another
medium as “content.” The content of a movie is a novel or a play or an opera. The effect of the movie form is not related to its program content. Another explanation that I got from that example is that Media throughout time has grow in to an array of channels and different forms.

Reading Response 4/12- Media Theory

The medium is important to how we consume media because it is responsible for the content we are exposed to, and the speed at which we receive it. For example, in previous decades when mediums consisted primarily of print media and television, the information we had access to was very limited and we had little choice as to how and when we consumed it. With the emergence of computers, smartphones, and on-demand televisions, the message within has developed exponentially; “the personal and social consequences of any medium– that is, of any extension of ourselves– result from the new scale that is introduced into our affairs by each extension of ourselves, or by any new technology…for the “message” of any medium or technology is the change of scale or pace or pattern that it introduces into human affairs” (McLuhan, 1964). Our consumption of digital media has become more accessible and diverse due to the more mobile and user-friendly nature of the medium. These platforms have also introduced a plethora of new content, which also offers more options to consumers. The medium controls all aspects of how we are exposed to media and as they continue to advance, the content within or the “message” will continue to change as well.

The Medium is the Message

Adcording to Marshal Mcluhan, the medium within The Medium is the Message, is the form of a message whether that be print, visual or oral. This determines the many ways in which that message will be perceived. Mcluhan believed that modern day technology/communications are effecting the ways we experience the world. These form of communication can include television, radio or a computer. I can agree to that there are some negative results pertaining to our medium now a days as well as the positive outcomes. The communication between people can be seen as increased but also decreased. The many new resources and options we have today makes it easier for us to get a message out. It allows faster communication with also being able to communicate with more people at once.

However, most of these resources and forms of communication are digital (cellphones, computers, television). This leads to less oral communication and human contact. There was one point made by Mcluhan about literacy being involved with the mediums that I also agree with.  Mcluhan believed that people would become more illiterate is being due to the oral and printed communication we lack. I can understand this because they less we have to read or write , we are not developing our vocabulary or expanding it.  Over all, this shows how important the medium is to the way we consume digital media today.
